A Beachball Mystery
There is a window near my office desk. I often look at the view outside while I’m creating a new story. I’m fascinated by the colorful birds at the feeders, the red berries on the holly bushes, and the brown grass that will soon start to change to green as the temperatures warm. On a recent windy day in the Lowcountry, there were leaves dancing in the air. Imagine my surprise when a single beachball rolled down the street. Yes, a beachball mystery.
I’ve enjoyed a variety of sights while gazing out of the window. The most recent mysterious sight caused me to pause and laugh. A lone beachball bounced down the street, as if someone had kicked the bright and colorful ball.
I waited and listened for the sounds of laughter or chatter. Nothing. Everything was quiet. The ball continued its journey from the street to the sidewalk. I decided to investigate. Opening my front door and stepping onto the porch, I looked to the left and to the right. Not a sound. Not a person. Nothing. The ball kept rolling. Interesting sight.
Walking back into the house, I considered asking the neighbors if the ball belonged to them. Then, I realized most everyone was at work or school. This mystery wouldn’t be solved yet.
The next day, as I sat at the desk again, another beachball rolled by. The wind carried it from one side of the street to the other. Could that be the same ball? No way. Something strange was happening. Where were these balls coming from, and who was the owner?
A couple of days later, a torrential downpour and wind caused everyone to stay inside. No neighborhood visits outside or games of hide and seek. The sound of the wind moving through the trees and flags flapping against the poles filled the air.
As the rain stopped, I went outside to see if our hummingbird feeder was safe. Then I noticed another strange sight. A large white trash bag full of beach balls. What in the world? Where did that come from? The bag had landed in a neighbor’s yard.
Waiting to see if the bag was picked up by someone or if I should retrieve it made us laugh. Bop and I checked to see if the bag was there. After a day, it was gone.
Beachballs. I don’t know where you came from or where you’ve gone. I’m thankful for the laughter and the simple act of trying to find the answer to the mystery.
Have you ever seen a mysterious object rolling down the street? Perhaps a beachball?
Have a blessed and fun-filled day,
Mimi aka Melissa Henderson
TweetBoards on Cars
Boards on cars? Did you do a double-take? I’m not referring to construction materials from the local home improvement store for building or landscaping. The boards I’m talking about are “surfboards”. Another hurricane has visited the eastern section of the country. The usual changing predictions had been televised for weeks. Professional weather personnel traveled every day to the shore to report any change in waves and shoreline. As the hurricane moved closer, I noticed more boards on cars.
Preparations began as the latest hurricane approached the eastern side of the country. The Lowcountry has seen devastating hurricanes in the past. Whether someone was born in this area or moved to the Lowcountry like my husband and I, everyone learns to be alert and take precautions. As we joined the crowd preparing for the storm, our own checklist awaited.
Alan and I went to the grocery store to stock up on needed supplies. Batteries, flashlights, and yes, chocolate candy and bottled water. On our way to the store, I noticed many vehicles with surfboards secured to the top of cars. While I waited in the car while Alan went into the store, I glanced around the parking lot. There were several surfboards on cars. I hoped to see who was driving the vehicles. The curiosity drew my attention as the parking lot began to fill.
Finally, several men and women exited the store and went to their cars. Their attire gave a clue to their destination. Surf shorts, t-shirts, sunglasses, and flip-flops. They had purchased supplies and were en route to the ocean.
After Alan returned to the car, he suggested we ride to an inlet and look for dolphins. Yes, we’ve become those folks. “Let’s go look at the waves.”, my dear husband said. I recalled how my parents loved to take a ride in the afternoons, just to be outside and enjoy the sights.
When we reached the bridge that crosses over the inlet, we saw people walking on the beach. The inlet area has “No swimming” signs posted at all times due to rip currents. However, we rode a little further and saw surfers enjoying the big waves. Happy surfers who came to the beach with boards on their cars.
I wondered what it’s like to be a surfer. I enjoy walking on the beach, collecting shells, and gazing at sunrises and sunsets. One of my favorite parts of the ocean in this area is the dolphins. Beautiful creatures that amaze me every time one jumps out of the water and splashes back down. But I will stay out of the water.
One of our nephews, Daniel Harris, is a talented and strong surfer. Daniel is in the photo above. He and his friends love the waves, the feel of the ocean water, and riding the surfboards. Daniel has created awesome surfboards. His talent is endless.
When I see Daniel headed to the ocean, there is usually a big smile on his face. He knows the importance of safety in the water. He also knows the joy of riding the big waves. Daniel has shared his love of the ocean with our family.
Daniel and our niece Ashley, along with their three kids, Peyton, Paige, and Ryder, have moved to an area near the ocean. They love “beach life”.
They can walk to the beach and carry their surfboards. If they want to travel to another area of waves and sand, they can secure the boards on top of their vehicles.
I’m reminded that God gives us glorious creations to enjoy such as the beach, the ocean, the inlet, the shells, the salty breeze, and much more. I’m also reminded that when I see “boards on cars”, someone is heading to the ocean or has already enjoyed riding the waves.
Either way, life is good.
Praise God for His blessings. Praise Him for fun times. Praise Him for surfers and their love for the ocean.
Are you a surfer? Have you seen the awesome ways surfers ride the waves? Have you seen “boards on cars”?
Have a blessed day,

TweetWriting to Shine His Light
Each month, a group of writers gathers in person and online to participate in the ACFW(American Christian Fiction Writers) Lowcountry Chapter meeting. Our group has grown since the first gathering a few years ago. Folks write fiction, non-fiction, stories for children, articles, devotions, and poetry. Every writer creates unique pieces that reflect their personality and beliefs. One important goal this group includes is that we are writing to shine His light. The light of God is evident in the words and actions of the members.
In 2023, the chapter compiled its first anthology, “Charleston Light: Stories Inspired by Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse.” The authors shared stories of love, hope, inspiration, and more. That award-winning book continues to be an important part of shining the light and love of God.
Our newest book will be available for purchase on October 1st. I’m pleased to announce that “A Holy City Christmas: Charleston Holiday Tales” is a delightful book filled with stories that will touch the hearts and souls of readers.
Eight authors from the group have penned special tales incorporating famous sights from the Charleston, South Carolina area. Visitors and locals may recognize the mentions of places such as the Dock Street Theater, Breach Inlet, The Citadel, and other famous places in the Lowcountry.
The chapter started working on the project by organizing details. We set deadlines, chose clip art, chose book cover designers, found a local artist (a chapter member) to provide personal line drawings of significance to each story, and wrote the stories. Within our chapter, some talented people provided services to help bring the book together. Several members took the time to edit each story. Everyone contributed to this book. Whether they wrote a story, drew pictures, created a cover, worked with sites to offer the anthology for sale, or prayed, every effort was placed in God’s hands.
A lot of “behind the scenes” efforts went into making this book possible.
The people in ACFW South Carolina Lowcountry Chapter are talented, compassionate, loving, caring, and dedicated folks who love the Lord.
In 2023, we were blessed to have book signings and participate in “A Moveable Feast” with My Sister’s Books in Pawleys Island. This year, we are having more book signings and hope to meet you at one or more events.
My story in this new anthology is “Sunrise Shells and Christmas Bells”. I hope you enjoy reading more about Lana Pierce. Readers asked me to continue her story and I’m glad I listened.
Lana Pierce has experienced the loss of her husband due to illness and then, a hurricane that
almost destroyed her home. While life continues, Lana becomes involved in a mystery and
possibly a new love. “Sunrise Shells and Christmas Bells” brings love, faith in God,
and hope for the future.
Both anthologies are available for purchase. Contact your local bookstore and see if the books are available. Place a request for your local library to carry the books. Amazon offers print and Kindle versions.
Proceeds from the first six months of sales will benefit “RISE”. This charity helps men who are trapped in poverty, homelessness, or addiction. “RISE” is Restored, Ignited, Supported, and Empowered to flourish by the grace of Jesus Christ.
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Psalms 119:105 NIV)
I hope you enjoy reading these wonderful new stories.
Blessings,

TweetSuper Exciting News for Readers
I am super excited to announce that I have a story in the new anthology “Charleston Light: Stories Inspired by Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse”. The book contains eight novellas written by authors who belong to the South Carolina Lowcountry Chapter of the American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW).
The inspiration for each unique story in this anthology came from the Charleston Light lighthouse on Sullivan’s Island. My husband (Alan) and I attend church on the island and enjoy learning the history of the island and the people. The writer’s group toured the Charleston Light lighthouse area and agreed this would be great material for stories.
My story is “Second Time Lighthouse Love”.
After two years, widow Lana Pierce continues to grieve the loss of her beloved husband Stan. When the older woman finds a mysterious notebook left on their favorite bench, she wonders if this could be a secret message intended for her. Is another “forever love” possible?
One of the extra special ideas came when the writers discussed how proceeds from sales of the book should be handled. As a group, the decision was made to donate all proceeds to SOUL (Sanctuary of Unborn Life). Dianne Miley, a chapter member of our group, and anthology contributor, is the Founder of SOUL. This faith-based non-profit group provides support, mentoring, and housing assistance for local pregnant and new mothers in need. More information about SOUL can be found on their website. www.sanctuaryofunbornlife.org

Creepy Crabs on A Hot Summer Day
“What in the world? Why are there fiddler crabs on my front porch?” I spoke aloud to myself.
Opening the front storm door to take a peek outside, I jumped as two small sand fiddler crabs raced across the pavement. The twosome were fast as lightning and caused me to hop from one foot to the other while trying to figure out their intended direction.
Alan and I have become accustomed to seeing South Carolina sights such as alligators in the neighborhood ponds, Eastern Hercules beetles in the grass, wild turkeys in the backyard, and armadillos digging holes in the dirt. But, seriously, sand fiddler crabs at the front door?
I slowed my breathing to calm my heart rate. What adventure or crazy sight would be next on the list of exciting things to share with family and friends? My next thought was wondering how to get rid of the fast moving creatures. Unfortunately, the crabs hid in an area that could not be reached. I would have to wait until another time to somehow remove them from the premises. The daily routine continued and the crabs remained hidden. I wouldn’t see them again. Or at least that was my story.
The next day, grandson Rowan was here to have playtime with Mimi and Bop. As Bop left the house and went to work, Rowan and I discussed our plans for the day. Sidewalk chalk drawing, creating crazy pictures with the new paint set and paper, playing with friends, blowing bubbles, and making up stories would be parts of the fun.
The outside trash can had been emptied earlier that day and was ready to be cleaned and brought back into the garage. As I pushed the button to open the garage door, two more sand fiddler crabs jumped into the garage and ran for cover. I screamed and laughed while watching the quick movement of the crabs. Rowan grabbed his tummy and doubled over with laughter.
“Mimi, quick, quick, get them. They went behind the recycle can. Mimi, here’s one. Get him with the broom.”
“Where, Rowan, where is it now? Do you see one?” I spoke between laughter as I found the broom and readied for attack.
“Behind that can, he’s behind that can.” Rowan gave directions as he giggled.
One little crab darted out from behind the trash can. I guarded against the creature by sweeping it with the broom. Watching as the crab went flying in the air from being swept, Rowan and I could not contain our giggles.
The next crab peeked out from behind a garden tool. I swung the broom into action and shooed that little thing right out onto the driveway.
Between laughs, Rowan yelled. “Mimi, quick. Close the door. He’s trying to come back in.”
Rowan and I stood and watched the garage door close. The crabs were outside on the pavement. We were safely inside the garage. The creepy crabs would have to endure a hot summer day.
After the laughter settled and our next activity began, Rowan and I looked at each other. “Mimi, those were some creepy crabs, right?”
“Yes, those were creepy crabs and I don’t want to see them again.”
Interesting fact is that we live about ten minutes from the ocean. There are ponds and marshes in every neighborhood so we should not be surprised at seeing the crabs on the front and back porch.
Of course, I had to share this story because as you know, “It’s Always a Story With the Hendersons.”
God creates the most awesome sights and sounds for us to enjoy, even if some of those things make us hop from one foot to the other.
Do you have any funny crab stories? Please share with us.
Have a blessed day,
Mimi aka Melissa Henderson
Beach Buddies and Mermaids
“What is your name? How old are you? I’m six.”
“I’m six, too. I go to school. What grade are you in? My Mama says I can’t go too far in the water.”
“Did you know I am a mermaid?”
I stood at the edge of the ocean. Waves rolled water in and out bringing warmth and sand to my feet. The back of my sun hat slapped against my neck as strong breezes rolled across the ocean. A string kept the hat from escaping and flying across the beach and into the ocean.
Some of our family had decided to have an afternoon at a local beach. Time to let the children run and play in the sand and splash in the water. The adults stood laser focused on each child while watching for rushing water and any need for help. Sometimes sand or water gets in the eyes and the young ones need assistance in cleaning their face.
On this particular afternoon the children in our family played, giggled, hid their feet under the sand, looked for sea shells, and watched for dolphins. As the fun continued, I noticed a young girl moving closer and closer to our family.
This girl watched us and began smiling. After running back to the blanket where her parents were sitting, she rushed back to begin talking with us.
The questions and comments came pouring out of her mouth. She was six. Her Mama said it was okay to talk to us. Her Mama was on the blanket “up there” and she pointed to her family. She told the children in our family her name, age, and asked if they knew she was a mermaid.
Giggles, jumping waves, and sharing beach toys quickly became fun activities.
As I stood and watched the children, I noticed their ease of chatting, laughing and sharing toys. The conversation went from one topic to another. No fussing. No arguing. Just good summertime fun with new friends.
The warmth of sunshine and the ease of new friendships brought a smile to my face. I began thinking of how often we take for granted the simple things in life. Times are stressful and become more busy with each passing moment.
Yet, here on this Sunday afternoon, children who had never met and may never see each other again, began playing and chatting like they were best friends.
They shared toys, giggles, and stories. Some stories were true and some were “made up”.
I hope that I will always be open and ready to enjoy time with new and not so new friends. These children reminded me of the love God has for each of His children.
These young ones had a major impact on me that day.
I’m still smiling thinking about the joy of being with the group and watching them enjoy the wonders of life. The children became “beach buddies” for the day.
Have you played in the sand lately? Have you visited the beach recently? What makes you smile?
Blessings, sand, and giggles,
Melissa Henderson aka Mimi
